An Apple A Day...

We have all heard the saying, "An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away." The truth is... it does a lot more than just keep the Doctor away!!

An apple... with its skin... contain a large amount of compounds known as Phytonutrients.

You have heard me talk about Phytonutrients many times in the past. Basically, they are nutritious compounds that have shown tons of potential in treating many diseases. Most of them are very concentrated in the dark colored fruits such as apples, pears, peaches, kale, and many others.

Many people don't realize that the peel actually contains most of the apples benefits!! So stop peeling your apples and throwing away all the good stuff!!

The peel contains more flavonoids than any other part of the apple. Flavonoids are a type of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, procyanidins, and quercetin. These antioxidants may prevent cancer, relieve pain and provide anti-inflammatory properties.

Flavonoids are among the first antioxidants to alert our bodies when they are coming under attack. They act as a natural insect repellent, thereby protecting us from toxins, pollutants, bug bites, and even toxins from the environment. Flavonoids, also present in wine, are known to help reduce the risk of heart disease... high cholesterol... and many other health issues.

Procyanidins that are found in the leaves, stems, and roots of certain fruits, including apples... play a role in the central nervous system and work indirectly in the production of dopamine, the neurotransmitter that facilitates the experience of pleasure!!

Quercetin is a phytonutrient that has anti-inflammatory properties and appears to inhibit COX-2 enzymes that help keep our hearts healthy. Quercetin is are among the phytonutrients that have been studied most frequently. They are also found in apple skins, red wine and green tea and rosemary oils!!

All in all... "An Apple a Day" does a lot more than just keep the Doctor away!! Add an least one apple to your daily diet each day... and feel the benefits immediately!!
